BOAO, Hainan, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A candidate for the next United Nations secretary general on Sunday stressed the significance of a "balaned" reform of the mechanisms and functions of the international organization.
The UN reform is imperative and must be performed in a balanced way, in an effort to meet the interests of all the 191 member countries, said Jayantha Dhanapala, senior adviser to the president of Sri Lanka at a luncheon of the ongoing Boao Forum for Asia annual meetings.
The reform is a "comprehensive process" and need hard works, said Dhanapala.
He stressed that the UN mechanism should be reformed, including to establish a peace and rebuilding committee in a bid to safeguard the fruit of peace-keeping activities and prevent repeat conflicts.
Meanwhile, the UN's functions should also be improved, such as to avoid repeated UN resolutions and ensure resolutions are meaningful and target-oriented, according to him.
Dhanapala, also former UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament, also appealed for reforms on the UN Secretariat and the personnel management. Enditem
